One person. One word. One thought can change a life forever.
Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of crystal-clear clarity. Most of us spend far more time talking about what we don't want than defining what we do. That may seem like a small difference, but it can change the direction of an entire life.
Throughout my lifetime, I've had the honor of witnessing what many would call miracles in the lives of people I had the privilege of coaching. Before offering guidance, I listened carefully to their stories, their challenges, and their dreams.
One pattern appeared again and again. The moment people became crystal clear about what they truly wanted, everything began to shift. Their decisions improved. Their confidence grew. Opportunities they had never noticed suddenly appeared.
It wasn't magic. It was clarity. Early in my own journey, I learned a lesson that has stayed with me ever since.
Everywhere I looked, I saw what I was looking for. When I focused on problems, I found more problems. When I looked for possibilities, I found those too.
One experience changed me forever. While on a business trip to San Diego, I spent nearly thirty minutes telling a friend everything that frustrated me—my company, my boss, the marketing plan, and just about everything else. When I finally stopped, she smiled and said, "Lynette, I hear everything you don't want, but I don't have a clue what you do want."I sat back in my chair, stunned. She was right.
I had become an expert at describing my problems, but I had never clearly defined my destination. Not long afterward, a successful businessman asked me a simple question.
"What do you want?"
I described my dream of building a home on a hill overlooking the city lights. Then I quickly added what everyone else had told me—that no such property existed. He smiled and said, "Then they're just going to have to move a mountain to your city." Then he gave me advice I have never forgotten. "Write it down. Be specific. Crystal clear."
After searching unsuccessfully for nearly two years, I finally did exactly that. Within two weeks, a friend called. "I know where your land is." We bought it. We built our dream home.
That experience taught me something I have carried with me ever since. Other people's opinions are not reality. They are simply opinions.
When we become crystal clear about what we want, our minds begin noticing people, ideas, conversations, and opportunities that were there all along.
So, allow me to ask you a question. What do you want? Not what someone else wants for you.
Not what others expect. What do you want? Who do you want to become? What do you want to learn? What experiences are calling you? Our lives touch many areas—mental, physical, spiritual, family, social, career, and financial. You don't have to transform all of them today. Just choose one. Write it down. Be specific. Become crystal clear. And remember to write the details. You may be surprised by what begins to appear once you know exactly what you're looking for.
Everywhere we look, we see what we’re looking for!
